ACCESSIBLE BEACH/RESORT HOUSE - Bald Head Island, NC It's quiet island,
with no McDonald's or big shopping centers and not private cars. That's
right I said no cars! Bald Head Island is a 20 minute ferry ride from
Southport, an old fishing community 30 minutes south of Wilmington, NC. The
ferry is accessible by ramp, but you may need assistance to get into the
enclosed area. Tram service to the unit is included in the price of the
ferry ticket. Transferring is required, but drivers are happy to assist.
The house has two bedrooms and two baths, one with a queen bed and two
twins in the second. It also has sofa/sleeper in living room so it can
sleep up to six. There is a ramp to the rear door and all areas are
accessible except the kitchen. It has all amenities including
washer/dryer, stereo and cable TV. Linens are included and the kitchen is
furnished with dishes, pots/pans etc. The accessible bath has a raised
toilet, shower stall with seat, and open basin. Available to renters is an
electric golf cart and two bicycles.
The complex where home is located is called Ibis Roost. It has its own
swimming pool: with a ramp into the pool complex. The house is in the
forest, about 5 minutes from the beach. There is a beach wheelchair at the
fire/police dept that can be borrowed and there is one beach access point
that was built accessible. Other island activities include golf, tennis
and dining at the Bald Head Island Club.

LONDON APARTMENT FOR RENT - If you want more room than a hotel, this
wheelchair accessible flat may be the solution for the disabled visitor to
London. . Built within the last few years the building is located on Drury
Lane in Covent Garden. It's within a few minutes' walking (wheeling)
distance of London's West End theaters, the British Museum and National
Gallery. Also close by are both Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.
The one bedroom apartment has just been renovated to widen doorways,
provide a roomy user-friendly bathroom with roll-under sink and extra space
around the commode. The kitchen is modern with a microwave oven, sink
disposal as well as washing machine and dryer. However, it's too small for
a wheelchair user to do much in. The bedroom has one queen-size bed and
there is sleeping accommodation for two more on a sofabed in the 27-foot
living room. There are two phones, and a new TV with VCR. For more

SUMMER FAMILY ADVENTURES - Each year Wilderness Inquiry, an organization
that has been providing adventure travel since 1978, offers several trips
designed for families. One of the distinguishing features of Wilderness
Inquiry is that it integrates people with varying levels of physical
ability in each activity.
Their program for families with young children are trips with a blend of a
relaxed pace with structured activity. You stay at primitive group
campsites where canoeing, fishing, hiking, and swimming are available. This
summer's family adventures include:
ITASCA STATE PARK, MN - The birthplace of the mighty Mississippi River and
home to ancient stands of red and white pine. History comes alive at
Itasca. Here you and your children can step across the creek that begins
the Mississippi, paddle on beautiful Lake Itasca, explore a 500-year old
Indian burial site, and visit the state's largest red pine. This is a
four-day trip and is run several times during the summer.
ST. CROIX RIVER - Bring the whole family on this 3-day introductory canoe
trip on the St. Croix River. Paddle 24-foot canoes down the peaceful St.
Croix River on a trip designed especially for families with kids aged five
and up. These stable voyageur canoes carry 5 to 9 people and are styled
after the boats of the fur traders who once traveled the river. This is a
three- day trip and runs several times during the summer.
VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK, MN - Paddling handmade 24-foot voyageur canoes
offers a great way for families to explore the Kabetogama Peninsula's many
sights. From the camp at Wolf Pack Islands, you'lll take a day to sit back
and soak in the wilderness, explore Rainy Lake, or if you like, cross the
border into Canada and explore Sixdeer Island. This is a five-day trip and
runs several times though out the summer.
YELLOWSTION NATIONAL PARK - Perched on the Continental Divide, Yellowstone
is a land of mountains, lakes, forests, and wildlife. You'll explore this
diverse country by foot and paddle as you visit the many lakes and sights
this park has to offer. Keep your eye out for elk, bison, eagles and other
wildlife. On the lakes, you will travel in custom-built, 24-foot voyageur
canoes. These fast, stable canoes are designed specifically for big lakes
like Yellowstone. This is a six-day trip and runs several times through
out the summer.

WELCOME JOIN THE CLUB - The Handicapped Travel Club was formed in 1973, in
Arcata, California by five disabled couples from California and Texas.
These couples had received so much enjoyment from travel and the
association with campers and RVers with disabilities, they decided to form
a club which would encourage other handicapped people to travel, to meet
and exchange ideas.

· Application fee is $10 which includes first year's dues
