ROARING LION INN
MONTANA BED & BREAKFAST
Located in Southwest Montana's Bitterroot Valley, the Roaring Lion Inn is
nestled in the heart of the forest, yet is only five minutes from historic
downtown Hamilton. The Bitterroot Valley, framed by the Bitterroot
Mountains to the west and the Sapphire Mountains to the east, is adjacent
to the Bitterroot-Selway and the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Areas, two of
the largest in the contiguous U.S. You can fish, hunt, or go hiking,
biking, or horseback riding along magnificent trails. The Bitterroot River,
only one of many streams, lakes, and rivers that mark this scenic area of
Montana, boasts rich fishing, offering steelhead trout, rainbow trout,
brown trout, brook trout, bull trout, and whitefish, among other types.
Wildlife is plentiful for "binocular hunting" and photography.
The distinctive town of Hamilton offers modern amenities but has as its hub
a late-1800's western Victorian main street for shopping, sightseeing, and
a spectacular view of the Bitterroot Mountains. Assistance from your hosts
in how to appreciate and enjoy the Bitterroot Valley is readily
available. The Roaring Lion Inn is available as a site for small weddings
or meetings, family get-togethers, small reunions, or just a fine home away
from home amidst the splendor of nature.
This rustic lodge is on one level and all areas are accessible by way of
wide doors and ramps. It has three large sleeping rooms each with an
outside entrance. Appointed with heirlooms, antiques, and artwork
collected over the years, the guestrooms are individually decorated, each
with a private bath and featuring a VCR and stone gas log fireplace. The
rich antiques, Old West memorabilia, and vintage photos of the Bitterroot
will relax you as you nestle in the unique twisted pine bed, handcrafted
from trees that grew in the nearby mountains. Featuring a brass king-sized
bed and jetted tub, the Montanan is spacious 25·X25· yet inviting, offering
views to both the north and south. Besides the jetted tub, the large
bathroom also has a roll-in shower with a fixed showerhead and a shower
bench available. The tranquil Captain's Retreat surrounds you with a
life-long collection of nautical antiques. All the guestrooms are
wheelchair accessible but only the Montanan is adapted.
A hearty Western breakfast is served around the great table. However, the
beauty and tranquility of your surroundings may inspire you to request
breakfast in bed, a treat that makes lazy mornings a delight at Roaring

NEW MAGAZINE
MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Wow! The premiere issue of SpeciaLiving just hit the streets. As the
editor this is pretty exciting for me. It will be exciting news for
readers too. When Accent on Living Magazine, of which I was the editor for
25 years, ceased publishing in June, many readers felt there would be a
void. I decided to publish SpeciaLiving to continue a magazine that would
cover issues of importance to physical disabled people.
SpeciaLiving is not going to be a clone of Accent, but the target audience
will be the same. The subjects covered will also be similar.
The Premier issue has information about accessible housing, i.e., making a
kitchen and bathroom more accessible and some smaller, inexpensive items
that can make a house a home for a disabled person. Many readers will be
happy that Joni, founder of Joni and Friends Ministries, will write a
column for each issue of SpeciaLiving. Her column provides inspiration for
many and touches on experiences and situations that each of us often
encounter in everyday living.
Travel close to home and to more exotic destinations, will continue to be
covered in each issue. In the first issue two readers tell about their
travel experiences in Italy. A world traveler offers information/tips she
has learned that you should head before setting off on your next vacation.
Readers are invited to submit questions about relationships which will be
answered by Wendy Wolfe who has had a dating service for disabled people
for several years. Also, readers are invited to submit questions, answers,
or comments on general subjects will be covered in letters to the
editor(Readers Write). This is an opportunity for readers to seek help
from other disabled people and provide solutions to others.

GERMANY
HAUS RHEINSBERG
After 6 years of construction and a cost of 60 million DM, Germany opened
the world's first, 100% wheelchair accessible, four star hotel in June
2001. Haus Rheinsberg or ·Hotel on the Lake· is located on the shores of
beautiful Grienerick Lake in Rheinsberg, north of Berlin. With its 108
rooms this facility is the flagship for barrier-free construction according
to the builder, whose goal it was to combine the rehabilitation of
physically handicapped people with the comfort of a four star hotel.
This explains the extensive choice of facilities, all built to accommodate
wheelchair using guests. The comfort starts at the reception, where half of
the front desk counter is placed at wheelchair height. Rooms have automatic
windows and doors with no thresholds. They have handrails, wheelchair
accessible shower or bathtub, choice of mobile shower seat or special
shower wheelchair, which allows rolling access over the toilet. Further
amenities include adjustable sink height, faucets with extra long handles,
and toilets that flush automatically.
Additionally each room has a mini bar, TV, telephone, Internet hook-up,
alarm system, fire alarm, and a barrier free balcony with a view of the
castle and lake Grienerick. Some rooms offer hospital beds, and some rooms
are free of carpet for guests with allergies.
Swimming is offered in the lake or the warm water swimming pool that is
accessible by
lift or slide. The hotel also offers a very unique boat ramp allowing
people to easily change from their wheelchair into boats and kayaks. There
is an indoor bowing alley, gym, sauna, and physiotherapy services which all
add to a rehabilitating stay.
There is a beautiful restaurant for your dining pleasure, a cozy fireplace,
sitting room,
several conference rooms, a large auditorium with a stage near the lake,
and a special
classroom with 12 PC stations where computer training is
offered. Physicians and nurses
are also available upon special request.
People who accompany wheelchair guests are welcome, but maximum 10 to 15%
of capacity can be filled with non-handicapped guests, according to hotel
policy. There are also a certain number of jobs for staff in all
departments, from accounts to catering to washing and cleaning, will be set
